Their Challenge

Andrew Turner began solving problems at an early age, with one of his earliest inventions being a device to stop his grandmother’s bath overflowing.

His business, Andrew Turner Inventions is dedicated to solving industry-specific problems, often referred to as “unmet needs.” The company specialises in developing practical solutions across various industries, assisting businesses in addressing technical challenges through innovation and invention.

The Challenge

Andrew was working on a project for Northumbrian Water that required a specialised device to be deployed in a pipeline system to extract data from liquid flow. The project posed a complex mechanical and fluid dynamics challenge, specifically in designing a device that could effectively move with the water while capturing meaningful data. Additionally, the device needed to be retrievable and function autonomously if it encountered obstacles.

The expertise provided by Arrow was incredibly valuable. Their specialised knowledge helped solve a very niche problem, and their support exceeded my expectations. I would highly recommend Arrow to anyone needing targeted academic expertise to advance their innovation.

Arrow Analyses the Business Challenge

The Arrow team based at the University of Sunderland analysed the feasibility of the device’s mechanical design. By leveraging computational fluid dynamics expertise, Arrow helped determine how the device would interact with the water flow. The project involved identifying potential roadblocks, ensuring the design could withstand real-world conditions, and validating the technical approach before advancing to prototype development.

Working Together for Real Results – Arrow’s Solution for Success

Arrow Senior Innovation Associate Richard Eynon and Dr Spyros Fakiridis from the University of Sunderland who specialises in computational fluid dynamics provided crucial expertise. The Arrow team developed six potential design concepts for Andrew, each focused on ensuring the device could successfully navigate through pipes while carrying its technology payload. The collaboration allowed Andrew to test and refine his invention efficiently, keeping the project on schedule. The feasibility study proved successful, and the project is now advancing towards real-world trials with international collaborators.

Hear from our university partners

This project was a fantastic example of how Arrow provides a route for academic expertise to be applied to real-world business challenges. By combining computational fluid dynamics with innovative design thinking, we were able to help Andrew refine his concept and bring it closer to market readiness.
