Their Challenge

Mark Bennett, founder of Carerflare Ltd – has a strong background in engineering and robotics – as well as a successful military career behind him. Following his military service, Mark took the opportunity to re-evaluate his future, and it was a very personal experience that inspired his next venture. Seeing his parents struggle to look after his grandparents sparked an interest in adult social care. His company, Carerflare, is a start-up dedicated to supporting independent living through the innovative use of technology.

Their first product and service combination alerts carer networks in the event of an incident. It links near-field communications wearable devices, such as radio frequency identification (RFID) wrist bands, a wireless technology that uses radio waves to identify objects, alongside a carer-based social network platform. This means that anyone with anything but the oldest of smartphones can act quickly and effectively, scanning the wearable device to immediately link them with the individual’s care network. Many groups can benefit from the security and reassurance offered by Carerflare – those with disabilities, the elderly, children, and anyone who wants to continue enjoying independent living, without having to stay close to caregivers.

Creating a reliable system that’s scalable and secure

Mark knew he was onto something revolutionary in the field of care. But there were obstacles in his path that he needed to overcome. Firstly, how to make sure that the platform could grow with its user base. Secondly, how to guarantee the system’s functionality in critical, time-sensitive situations. And finally, how to manage secure storage, transmission, and access to sensitive information.

Arrow gave me critical support that has significantly boosted Carerflare’s confidence in achieving its objectives. The Arrow project has been pivotal in reducing development time and helping me leap over potential pitfalls. The path to market now looks smooth and we’re eager to get cracking.

Arrow identified the right support

Arrow identifies the right support

Following an introduction to Arrow from North of Tyne Digital Skills Programme, Mark was excited to hear that academics at the University of Sunderland could help to propel his business forward – as this was where he’d studied his own BEng.

Mark was counting on Arrow to provide academic insights into conquering these challenges. He was also keen to get expert guidance on deploying the system and exploring future enhancements, such as active location-tracking devices.

Through Arrow he collaborated with a highly skilled team, led by Arrow’s Peter Usher. The University research team included Professor Yongqiang Cheng and Dr. Sam Danso focusing on data security and scalable deployment, and Simin Baloochzadeh exploring cutting-edge opportunities in wearables.

Working together for real results – Arrow’s solution for success

The Arrow and University of Sunderland partners delivered a comprehensive academic report, addressing critical considerations for deploying the system into the Cloud via services such as AWS. This included:

  • Strategies for boosting reliability and scalability.
  • Best practices for unbeatable data security.
  • Exploration of future opportunities, including alternative powering methods for wearable devices.

Through Arrow’s support, Carerflare has established a clear roadmap for deploying its system. This has saved months of internal research and development, accelerating the company’s timeline for becoming operational. Mark and the Carerflare team also plan to use the insights from the Arrow report to explore additional products and services

Hear from our university partners

The areas Carerflare had identified as gaps in their knowledge were perfectly aligned to the University of Sunderland’s expertise in wearables and data security. The Arrow project addressed the aims agreed with Mark and delivered research, evaluation, and options on scalability, compliance, GDPR, and device power to drive their business innovation forward.
