Their Challenge

Intelligent Gels is a successful company that provides answers to previously unsolvable problems by changing the way that products are used. They’re pioneers in eco-friendly innovations, crafting gel-based solutions for use in industries as diverse as food, horticulture, oil and gas. Recently, they embarked on a bold mission to create an eco-friendly fishing bait that would eliminate the need for plastics and foams, safeguarding aquatic ecosystems.

A change to regulations demands a new formulation

Evolving EU regulations on natural colourings presented a significant challenge to managing director Matt Wilson and his team at Intelligent Gels. They had been developing a fishing bait that combined all the things that anglers demand – temperature stability, durability and quality. They previously relied on non-natural colourings in their products, restricting access to European markets. Reformulating with natural dyes introduced issues such as colour instability, a shorter shelf life and high levels of gel viscosity that proved problematic in production. These obstacles were standing in the way of achieving a market-ready product. Lacking the in-house resources needed for dedicated research, they looked to Arrow for support.

Arrow gave us the tools to tackle a complex problem head-on. Their approach has not only advanced our product development, but strengthened our partnership with Durham University, setting the stage for future innovation in the region.

Arrow identified the right support

Arrow identifies the right support

The Arrow programme at Durham University opened the door to both UK Shared Prosperity Funding funding and scientific knowledge. Dr. Andrea Zachariou of Arrow led the project, working alongside Dr. Richard Thompson from Durham University. Andrea’s proactive and solution-driven approach, alongside market intelligence from bait suppliers, shaped the research in selecting and testing replacement natural dyes. Additional attention was given to secondary issues, like addressing gel viscosity to improve pellet manufacturing.

Working together for real results – Arrow’s solution for success

The Arrow team rapidly honed in on one critical issue: natural colouring integration. Using Durham University’s Orbit prototype lab, they began exploring optimal component ratios and alternative sources of natural dyes, while preserving the bait’s fishability and temperature resistance.

As a result of working with Arrow, Intelligent Gels now has a deep insight into how natural colourings interact with a gel formulation. This has helped to identify the actions they need to take to achieve EU-compliance. Their game-changing product is now 95% of the way to market and the team have a clear understanding of the steps they need to take to get it over the line. Although a final product is yet to launch, the project has laid the groundwork for overcoming regulatory challenges and meeting industry demands.

This project showcases the power of collaboration in overcoming industry challenges. With a strong commitment to innovation and sustainability, the company continues to work closely with Durham University to create cutting-edge solutions, bringing employment opportunities to the North East and driving forward eco-conscious product development.
