Their Challenge

ROXID is a pioneering application to help manage information about heritage sites to prevent duplication and waste in conservation practices, significantly enhancing efficiency. Through an Arrow project ROXID was able to utilise AI to create an intelligent system to manage heritage monuments sustainably and predict the conservation needs intelligently.

Whilst working as a researcher and chartered architect on research projects in heritage conservation in the UK and Europe Roxana Montazerian identified a critical gap in the sector: there was no central resource for logging completed work and surveys on heritage sites. Recognising the inefficiencies caused by fragmented data, outdated collection methods, and duplicated research efforts, she founded ROXID to address this challenge.

Roxana saw an opportunity to create an internationally available database to provide heritage organisations, researchers, and professionals with seamless access to existing data, minimising duplication and optimising conservation efforts. Seeing this opportunity, she was driven to create ROXID, a database application which aims to be the first, heritage innovation hub to support and help save the heritage sites for future generations.

ROXID identified a challenge in automating the extraction of complex archaeological reports. The manual data collection process was labour-intensive and hindered scalability, sparking the idea for an AI-driven solution.

The project with Arrow and NICD helped us understand the potential of AI in our field and connected us with world-class experts. Their support was instrumental in shaping our digital application and securing further funding and investment.

Arrow Analyses the Business Challenge

ROXID had previously completed one-day Project Success Workshop with the National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD) to scope this project and they had suggested the next step could be done through a fully-funded bespoke Arrow project.

Recognising ROXID’s need for automation and intelligent data processing, Arrow designed and delivered a project in collaboration with experts at NICD to explore AI-based approaches to automate data extraction from available resources. Support through the Arrow project helped ROXID refine their business problem, connect with the right University expertise, and assess technological feasibility.

ROXID’s Arrow project focused on automating the retrieval of available data on historical sites, integrating diverse construction, conservation, and research activities. The aim of the system is to reduce redundancy, improve decision-making, and enable timeline overview of extracted data

As part of ROXID’s Arrow project NICD’s team of expert data scientists, provided insights into natural language processing (NLP) techniques information extraction using large language models (LLMs).

Key outcomes from the Arrow project included:

  • A structured assessment of AI-driven automation possibilities
  • Proof-of-concept development for extracting structured data from unstructured reports
  • A roadmap for further research and feature expansion
  • Identification of funding opportunities, including Innovate UK grants and match funding through Arrow

The project allowed ROXID to integrate cutting-edge expertise with real-world applications, ensuring that the classified database system is both technically robust and commercially viable.

As a direct result of the Arrow project, ROXID has secured investment and Innovate UK funding, enabling the creation of two new part time jobs for research and development while advancing their AI-powered platform.  The project has also enabled Roxana to file a patent on one of the technologies powering behind the ROXID platform.

Project Results

  • Automated key elements of data extraction from archaeological reports
  • Secured Innovate UK funding for further development
  • Ongoing collaboration with NICD for continued R&D
  • Positioned ROXID as a leader in AI-driven heritage conservation technology
  • Patent application for ROXID’s IP

Hear from our university partners

The Arrow and NICD team thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with Roxana on this innovative project. Extracting the right information from diverse unstructured data presented an exciting challenge and allowed us to test the boundaries of state-of-the-art deep learning models. We are thrilled to see this project evolve and contribute to the development of Roxana’s transformative platform.
