Their Challenge

Oracle Drives & Automation (ODA), based in Peterlee in the North East of England, is a leading provider of control solutions for industry. Specialising in energy-efficient systems, they work across many sectors, from oil and gas to medical. Sam Moody, Business Development Manager at ODA, plays a key role in driving both technical design and client relationships.

Their challenge:

Backing up claims with proven science
ODA were facing a challenge in proving the energy efficiency of their systems to customers. Despite their expertise in control and drive system integration, they needed an independent evaluation of their claims – especially if they were to succeed in improving their market position.

The collaboration with Arrow and Durham University has opened doors, giving us a significant advantage over competitors who focus more on machine upgrades but overlook energy efficiency. The experience was seamless, and a real game-changer that’s given us a tactical advantage in a competitive market. I wholeheartedly recommend the partnership with Arrow to others seeking to boost their innovation journey.

Arrow Analyses the Business Challenge

Arrow identifies the right support

A collaboration with the Arrow team at Durham University, was the perfect way to use a rigorous academic approach to evaluate their claims in the hope of winning the hearts and minds of more clients.

Working together for real results – Arrow’s solution for success

Dr. Matthew Littlefair, Senior Innovation Associate for Arrow, delivered a wealth of academic insight to ODA. Additionally, Dr. Nur Sarma, Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering at Durham University, provided top-level academic support to the project. Together, Matthew and Nur were able to create a literature review of cutting-edge approaches tailored to the needs of ODA. This was the kind of rigorous evidence ODA needed to supercharge their already impressive knowledge of energy efficiency. With a university-backed white paper adding further weight, suddenly ODA weren’t just talking the talk – they could show their customers that they had the expertise and science to back up their ambitious claims.

The project provided insight into how upgraded machinery with new, energy-efficient components, could provide financial benefits to clients of ODA. Through these potential modifications, energy intensive processes could be transformed. Less energy would be required to perform the same tasks, resulting in greener operation. The project focussed on case studies of three high-profile companies who rely on technology that ODA specialises in. It was found, in all examples, that through the investment in new energy-efficient drives, the companies should make substantial savings, and achieve a return on investment within a few years.

With a dynamic, collaborative energy driving the whole project, ODA were delighted to see real benefits from the Arrow project, such as a more powerful value proposition for customers, a stronger reputation in the market and a brighter future for the company and its team.

Hear from our university partners

The interaction between ODA and Durham University over the past few months has been really positive. Detailed technical research has been performed in order to understand where ODA could lead the competition and provide their clients with energy efficient solutions. From this, ODA’s clients will not only save money, but they will be able to reduce CO2 emissions. I wish ODA all the best, and I look forward to hearing about their future progress.
