Terraligo Pioneering Accessible Carbon Capture for a Greener Future
Chollerton, Northumberland
Terraligo is an environmental research and consultancy venture based in Northumberland, founded by Dr Richard Johnston – an innovator, environmentalist and passionate advocate for real-world climate action. Richard has devoted his career to finding practical, science-based solutions to environmental challenges. Terraligo’s innovation focus centres on harnessing biochar: a form of biomass converted into stable carbon, potentially remaining in the soil for hundreds of years and bolstering both soil fertility and plant growth.
With roots in environmental chemistry and long experience in water and soil analysis, Richard set out to empower everyday people and large-scale operators alike to make meaningful contributions to carbon capture. Terraligo’s ultimate goal is twofold: developing leading-edge research that advances biochar’s efficacy and establishing real-world methods that anyone can adopt to help mitigate climate breakdown.
Building a Solid Scientific Foundation
A key obstacle facing Terraligo was the limited availability of robust, reliable methods to analyse different forms of biochar. Although biochar’s climate benefits are well recognised, not all carbon is created equal. To measure its stability, purity and potential for soil enrichment precisely, advanced analytical chemistry techniques are required. These tests can be costly and often beyond the scope of smaller organisations. Without robust academic data, Terraligo risked being unable to prove the effectiveness of its particular approach and ultimately advance biochar’s commercial and environmental viability.
Arrow did precisely what I needed them to do—bring academic expertise and genuine enthusiasm to our research. Their support made all the difference, opening the door to further investigation and helping us build the scientific case for biochar’s potential. It’s partnerships like this that truly empower start-ups to tackle climate challenges head-on.Dr Richard Johnston

Arrow Identifies the Right Support
Terraligo turned to Arrow for assistance in bridging these knowledge gaps and validating its biochar innovations. Dr Kate Nicholson, Associate Professor in Chemistry at Northumbria University, and Dr Deblina Majumder from Northumbria’s Arrow team were keen to collaborate on Terraligo’s problem. Through Arrow Terraligo gained access to both state-of-the-art lab facilities and the vital academic insights needed to develop a stronger, evidence-based foundation for their carbon analysis method.
Working Together for Real Results – Arrow’s Solution for Success
Arrow’s intervention transformed Terraligo’s early-stage ideas into tangible, testable outcomes.
Throughout this process, Richard found Arrow’s enthusiastic support and reliable research were invaluable. The shared commitment to climate solutions meant Terraligo received much more than a one-off scientific report—it gained a community of collaborators eager to help refine and scale the technology.
The Future: Scaling Up and Spreading the Word
Buoyed by the feasibility study’s positive findings, Terraligo has its sights set on expanding the project:
Carbon sequestration is a vital route to mitigating environmental impacts. If companies are going to do this, they need reliable methods that quantify and validate the amount of carbon locked away over time. Terraligo are at the heart of this discussion as the industrial standards are developed, and we’re proud to be helping them develop benign test methods to support that certification.Dr Deblina Majumder
